From the start, David Saltzman, the late author-illustrator of the best-selling picture book The Jester Has Lost His Jingle, knew that his life-affirming message that laughter is inside all of us would be of distinct help to children with special needs, especially those with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and problems. They fulfilled their promise to David by setting aside 10,000 of a first-print run of 30,000 books for children newly diagnosed with cancer. Working with Parents Against Cancer, the nonprofit support group of the Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center of Miller Children's Hospital at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and with generous contributions from the Harman Family Foundation, the Norris Foundation, the Torino Family Foundation and others, the Saltzmans made David's dream come true. Since then, additional corporate sponsors, foundations and individuals have all helped to get David's book and The Jester & Pharley Doll to children with special needs. |
