SPECIAL DELIVERYDr. Mark Roberts, right, Medical Director of Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center of Miller Children's, joins Barbara Saltzman and Dr. Jerry Z. Finklestein, former Medical Director of JJCCC, for the unveiling of The Jester & Pharley Smile Cart. The Smile Cart was donated by the Allswang family of Northern California David Allswang of Berkeley and Jester & Pharley Phund Board of Governors members Damon Allswang and Rebecca Allswang of Oakland.
 
OPEN SESAME Dr. Mark Roberts, Medical Director of JJCCC, unveils The Jester & Pharley Smile Cart for Miller Children's patients and guests. The Smile Cart comes complete with a TV, VCR and radio-tape-CD unit donated by Sony Medical Systems, along with Jester books and dolls donated by the Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation of Long Beach.

 
FOND MEMORIES Dr. Jerry Z. Finklestein recalls the moment, exactly seven years prior to the Smile Cart's dedication, when Barbara Saltzman introduced him to The Jester Has Lost His Jingle. The meeting was the first time that The Jester's Mom ever let her son David's book out of her hands. "It was the beginning of bringing David's important message to children with cancer all over the country," Dr. Finklestein says.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT Dr. Ralph Richardson, Director of Psychosocial Sciences of JJCCC, joins The Jester's Mom in welcoming the hospital's first Smile Cart. "These carts will be of tremendous value to our center in the effort to make our patients' time in the hospital a little less difficult and a little more pleasant," he says.
MEDICAL SUPPORT "I'm so pleased that we'll have The Jester & Pharley Smile Cart available to brighten up our patients' days in the hospital," says Dr. Ramesh Patel of hematology/oncology at JJCCC.
ALL SMILES Cathy Kopy, Executive Director of the Malcolm C. Todd,, M.D., Cancer Institute and former director of Parents Against Cancer, joins Dr. Jerry Z. Finklestein, former director of JJCCC and staff physician at JJCCC, in congratulating The Jester's Mom on bringing The Jester & Pharley to their facility.

LINCOLN CARES Students from Tracks B&C of Long Beach's Lincoln Elementary School read 75,163 pages in extracurricular efforts to donate copies of The Jester book and doll to patients at Miller Children's. Joining their librarian Pam Sich, rear, and The Jester's Mom to personally present their gifts to patients, are, from left, first row, Ritchie Tith, 3rd grade (champion reader at 2,493 pages); Sam Thik, recent graduate volunteer who helped coordinate efforts; Gabby Carillo, 2nd grade; Annie Pham, 4th grade; back row, Juan Anquiano, who composed a special Jester poem, and Patricia Padilla, 1st grade.
HOMETOWN HEROESKCBS-TV Channel 2 anchor Sophia Choi talks with Lincoln Elementary librarian Pam Sich about how Lincoln students "read like crazy" to help patients at Miller Children's. "I'm very proud of them," Mrs. Sich notes, citing how much time they spent to be able to bring smiles to ill children. "They are true heroes, and they were very pleased to be able to personally present their gifts," Mrs. Sich says of the top readers and volunteers who participated in the presentation ceremony.
GET WELL WISHESLincoln Elementary students also created Phun Cards - sending get well wishes and jokes to keep Miller Children's Hospital patients smiling.
WITH LINCOLN GIFTSYoung Miller patients proudly display the Jester books and dolls they received from Lincoln students. They all asked The Jester's Mom to inscribe them.
PAC PHANS Children of Parents Against Cancer members came together to present an inventive "Thank You" poster they created. The youngsters, who have seen firsthand how finding laughter helps families deal with cancer, performed an original song by Mickey Washington to say "Thank You for The Jester & Pharley Smile Cart." With The Jester's Mom, from left, are Jennifer Alcazar, Comille Begnaud, Teddy Valentovich and Gilbert and Albert Cervantes.
