LINCOLN LAUGHTEROn August 1, Track A&D students at Lincoln Elementary School began their joyous journey in support of The Jester & Pharley Phund's Literacy & Outreach program to help patients at Miller Children's Hospital of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

PROUD MOMENTLeft, Barbara Saltzman, The Jester's Mom, and librarian Pam Sich congratulate Abraham Lincoln Elementary students from Tracks A & D, who gather on the playground for recognition of their accomplishments. As part of The Jester & Pharley Phund Literacy & Outreach Program, underwritten with a grant from Toyota Financial Services, Tracks A & D students read more than 46,000 pages in one week to help bring Jester & Pharley books and dolls to patients at Miller Children's Hospital of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
CERTIFICATES OF DISTINCTION — Shirley Dixon, Development Officer of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Foundation, helps present jingling Jester certificates to top readers in each class. "We are very proud of you and your classmates," she says.
MEETING THE CHALLENGERita Bright, Director of Child Life for Miller Children's Hospital, thanks Lincoln students for working so hard to help the patients she helps care for. "You have made their lives a lot brighter," she tells them. Students in more than half the classrooms also created get well cards for patients, with class representatives presenting Ms. Bright with bundles of greetings for Miller Children's patients.
 
REMARKABLE GIFT Volunteer tutor Christopher Abasta accepts a special certificate on behalf of Angela Adams' fourth grade class in recognition of "extraordinary acts of kindness on behalf of ill children." Ms. Adams' fourth graders, left, hold up The Jester & Pharley books and dolls their class is donating to Miller Children's Hospital. The students, inspired by David's story and its ability to help young patients cope with illness, decided to use the $600 they earned for an overnight field trip to the Long Beach Aquarium to instead help youngsters at Miller Children's.
 

GENEROUS GESTUREMs. Adams' fourth graders display The Jester Has Lost His Jingle books and Jester & Pharley Dolls that they presented to Rita Bright of Miller Children's for distribution to patients at the Long Beach hospital. "I'm so very proud of these children," says Miss Adams. "Their unselfish behavior and compassion for others is a remarkable example for others. They have learned something about caring that will last forever."

JINGLING CERTIFICATES — Each of the 229 students in Grades 1-5 who participated in the voluntary Read-a-Thon received a personalized Certificate of Participation.

 

During the seven day Read-a-Thon, 229 students from Lincoln Elementary Tracks A&D kept journals to document their reading.

Altogether, Lincoln Tracks A&D students read 46,048 pages, earning points to donate copies of The Jester Has Lost His Jingle and Jester & Pharley Dolls to the patients at Miller Children's Hospital of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
