The late author’s mother, Barbara Saltzman, center, who heads the nonprofit Jester & Pharley Phund, read the story in English and Spanish.
March 2013 -- At George White -- Knights of the Caring Kind. Modern-day chivalry and compassion abound at George White Elementary School in Laguna Niguel.


September 2012
-- Dr. Jerry Finklestein, left, and Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach Chief Medical Officer Dr. Divya-Devi Joshi congratulate The Phund's Barbara Saltzman on publication of the bilingual Jester. Saltzman read The Jester to Miller Children's patients while a child life specialist read the translation. "It was thrilling to share the story in English and Spanish for the first time at Miller's, just as we introduced it in English with Dr. Finklestein in 1995," Saltzman said.

July 2012 -- Donations honoring Joe & Barbara Saltzman on their 50th anniversary will bring Jester books and dolls to hundreds of children with cancer. More than 150 friends and relatives joined the couple for an afternoon filled with smiles, laughter and poignant memories.

June 2012 -- The Jester's Mom introduces David' book to Jefferson Elementary, as it becomes the first school in the Compton Unified School District to complete a Jester Reading Makes A Difference Read-A-Thon. Principal M ario Marcos looks forward to challenging his Jefferson Jaguars to read even more pages next semester with more Compton schools trying to beat their record.


June 2012
-- Bandini 5th graders in Mrs. Gonzalez's room jump with joy to discover they are the top reading classroom in the school -- with an amazing 67,763 pages .The school bested its previous record tallying 327,762 pages in three weeks, an average of 761 pages per student.



May 2012
-- Mattie Lou Maxwell Elementary School students top the Magnolia School District chart with nearly 600,000 pages read in a three-
week Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon. Kindergarteners drew big smiles when they took their seats sporting their hand-made Pharleys.

May 2012 --Principal Rene Chavez and top reader at Bonita Street Elementary -- a 2nd grader -- tell The Jester's Mom they can't wait for next year's program.



March 2012 -- Fifth grade teacher Laura Mirabella and students proudly welcome Barbara Saltzman back to Pyles Elementary School in Anaheim to wrap up their Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon. Saltzman congratulates everyone at the school-wide assembly for all their hard work and effort to benefit the patients at Kaiser Permanente in Anaheim.
April 2012 -- Washington Elementary Principal Edward Espino honors school-wide top reader, a sixth grader who read more than 9,400 pages during the three-week Reading Makes A Difference program.

March 2012--
Dr. Jonas E. Salk Elementary School students read more than half-a-million pages in a three-week Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon. School-wide top reader, holding the No. 9 poster, is third grader Johnny Nguyen who read more than 12,000 pages. His brother, Tommy Nguyen, holds the No. 7 poster for being the top reader in the fifth grade.


March 2012--
Top-reading students at Lord Baden-Powell Elementary in Anaheim proudly display total number of pages read in their Jester & Pharley read-a-thon to benefit patients at UC Irvine Medical Center. Magnolia School District Assistant Superintendent Hanan Thornton, center, gave students at each grade level who read the most pages a special Jester Jingle certificate.

March 2012--
Students at Walt Disney Elementary in Anaheim read 462,553 pages to honor classmate Jack Fennell, center, and his battle against cancer. Members of the Magnolia School District Board -- Assistant Superintendent Kevin Smith, left, and Superintendent Dr. Ellen Curtin, second from left, joined to congratulate Jack and the student body on their reading achievements. From right, Principal Teali Fielder, Shari Koss of Disney VoluntEARS and Phund Director, Barbara Saltzman, added their cheers. Disney VoluntEARS Community Fund sponsored the Reading Makes a Difference™ program which brought 35 Jester books and 35 Jester & Pharley Dolls to Orange County Ronald McDonald House.
March 2012--Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary top readers at every grade level proudly hold up a “number” sign  that spells out how many total  pages the student body and teachers read in a Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon: an amazing 339,086! Their free-time reading over three weeks generated the donation of Jester books and dolls to UC Irvine Medical Center pediatric patients. The Anaheim school is one of many in the Magnolia School District participating in The Phund’s Reading Makes A Difference™ literacy program that helped celebrate Read Across America.

January 2012--
Fifth grader Karla Montalvo of State Street Elementary School in South Gate presents a symbolic Jester book and doll to St. Francis Medical Center's Grace Mendez. "The students were inspired to read more than ever to give Jester books to patients in their community," said librarian Bevery Birdsall. The Reading Makes a Difference™ program was sponsored by The Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation.

These wonderfully drawn pictures and cheerful get well cards were created as part of Bandini's participation in The Jester & Pharley Phund's Reading Makes a Difference Read-A-Thon.
May 2011--Del Rio Principal Maria Ochoa, left, looks on proudly during the Jester recognition assembly. Top reader Ulysses Aguilar won the honor of presenting a symbolic Jester book and doll on behalf of the student body. Jessica Fuentes Wood, far right, gratefully accepts the Jester books and dolls for Tri-City Medical Center patients. The Jester's Mom congratulates the Oceanside students for reading more than 350,000 pages during their four-month read-a-thon. San Diego TV station KNSD reported on the school's outstanding achievement.


May 2011--
Jester & Pharley entertain kids and adults alike at the 16th annual L.A Times Festival of Books held this year for the first time at USC.




April 2011
--De Anza Elementary, in Hawthorne, CA, reads an amazing 813,963 pages over three weeks and donates books and dolls to California Hospital in Los Angeles. Child Life Specialist, Tanya Ybarra, from California Hospital accepts the donation from De Anza's top reader, who herself read 5,134 pages!


March 2011--
Albert Schweitzer Elementary, in Anaheim, CA reads 407,188 pages during their four-week Reading Makes a Difference Read-A-Thon. The school donated books and dolls to Irvine Medical Center in Orange, CA. Joan Ende, right, Reading Coach at Schweitzer, kept track of student reading progress during the Read-A-Thon on their very own Pharley-O-Meter and proudly displays the final count of pages read.

March 2011--The Valley Stream North High School National Honor Society, donates 17 Jester books and 17 Jester & Pharley Dolls during their visit to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NJ. National Honor Society representatives and their adviser, Jill Goldstein, present a patient, Vanessa (photo on right), with her very own copy of The Jester Has Lost His Jingle and Jester & Pharley Doll. This is the second year that the National Honor Society has participated in a Jester Reading to Give Read-A-Thon to benefit this hospital.

February 2011--
Four-year old Rena receives a Jester book and doll through our Smiles for Kids With Cancer program.
